The Personal Pick - Part Four - The Missing Link

If " Missing Link " sounds a little dramatic, consider the way that your work colleagues show you the pictures of the weddings, sports carnivals, and car shows that they attend.

They pull out a $ 1000 device with a sctratched or broken glass screen on the front and a little symbol of half a battery flashing on and off. They frantically tap away at it and then swipe their fingers left, right, up, and down trying to make a 3 1/2 inch by 5 inch picture appear. Like as not, if it actually is found, it will have enough Instagram filters on it to look like an 1880 cabinet card, but you may not be able to see this before the little battery symbol winks out and the screen goes black. Then you can watch your colleague sitting in their car for half an hour until the phone charges up again.

In the meantime, you can look at an album of prints...

I am suggesting that either you need to come on down to the Murray Street shop of Camera Electronic and get a set of prints made on the Fujifilm printing system...or steer down to the third island stand in the shop and look seriously at the Epson SureColor SC - P600 and P800 inkjet printers. They are two of the very best ways for a serious enthusiast to escape from the dungeon of the mobile screen.

Don't get me wrong - I thoroughly respect putting pictures on a computer screen. As this column is getting typed on an iPad, the main computer is burning off belly-dance discs from a recent show. I daresay few of them will end up as prints. That is the ephemeral nature of the dance shot. But if ever I take a doozey, that one deserves to be at least an A4 print. I rely upon the Epson A3+ printer in my studio to do it, and frequently it does a great deal more. Enough images and some good paper and you have an exhibition.

The P600 most closely corresponds to the Epson printer I use - the A3+ size. If I needed to go up to A2 it would be the P800. Both use the K3 Epson inks for the same result on the paper. The,smaller printer uses smaller ink cartridges, which means a higher price per ml for the ink, but also means that if I do not print as extensively, I am not risking larger quantities that may go stale or flat. This is a real thing and whichever printer one chooses, it is wise to cycle it through with at least one print per week.

Note on the sign that there is a cashback and roll paper adapter on offer as special inducements. I have used an adapter and can report it as a successful when you want long banners or odd sizes of print. Otherwise there are good supplies of Hähnemuele and Ilford papers to suit every taste.

These days there are very easy connections possible between the printers and the computers. I use a simple plugged cord for mine but could have chosen a wireless connection instead. Networking is also available, if you don't mind someone else using up all your ink and paper.

I lock mine away.

Huzzah For The Troops - Huzzah For The Photographers

A spring day out is an occsion to be treasured. A spring day out at Government House seeing how the ruling class lives even more so. And an opportunity to review the troops should never be missed.

Thus the pictures you see on this morning's blog. Perth on a sunny day can be brutal as far as contrast in lighting goes but the readers of this column are old hands at modifying this with fill-flash or seeking shady spots to shoot. In some cases the strong shade and light is exactly right for a shot evoking the era - witness our cigarette card of the Pensioner Guard . If you had gone to the open day as I did you could collect the entire series without risking your health...

Okay, that was the entertainment - here comes the commercial. A Fujifilm X-E2 camera with the 27mm f:2.8 lens was used to take all the pictures. An EF-42 flash was attached and set to +.5 fill ratio. The entire compass of technical skill needed after that was to point the camera at the subject and press the right forefinger. The reward was files that needed no fiddling.

Which did not stop me fiddling, of course... I am like you - you would fiddle with the WB slider and the shadow fill and the exposure even if it was perfect. I went further and added the effect in Alien Skin Snap Art 3 that made a watercolour of the Pensioner Guard. And the lettering. Hey, this is photography and you and I and the entire staff of Camera Electronic love it.

We're not alone. The cheerful tourists are a Fujfilm couple - She's an X-E2 with 18-55mm lens and he's  an X-T1 with a 27mm lens. We cheerfully agreed upon it as a perfect choice for the day. SO nice to have someone else re-inforce your prejudices...

Day 5 - New Glass For Less Grass - Sigma and Zeiss cashbacks

Well, that's an interesting combination - Sigma and Zeiss.

Both top quality lens manufacturers that deal in different operational concepts - one looking to make a number of value-packed zoom lenses and one seeking the prime market. The good thing for users of Nikon and Canon camera bodies is that many of their products can be found with mounts for these brands.

But consider - you might find Sigma or Zeiss lenses on a lot of camera bodies. We can think of Zeiss lenses on Fujifilm X-series, Sigma on Olympus and Panasonic, Zeiss on Leica M bodies, and a number of Zeiss's devices associated with Sony.

Come to think of it there are adapters that allow these products onto a lot of micro 4/3 or other mirror-less bodies. A bit of a juggle sometimes but surprisingly do-able nonetheless if one is prepared to focus and set apertures manually. A lot of studio closeups for this column are taken with an adapted lens that started on a DSLR and now fronts a mirror-less camera. It's not speed-demon work but yields a fine focus.

Anyway, there is to be a $200 cashback for these items today - Tues the 15th of December. $ 200 is large coarse money for many citizens and not to be disparaged by any means.

By the way, when you stop by the Sigma cabinet at the front of the shop take some time to inspect the aluminium lens barrel from a Sigma lens that is displayed there for effect. It is comforting to see the level of precision that is buried under the black paint.

Double Your Pleasure With Canon

Two other of our divisions of electronic babble - pardon me, I meant social media - have probably apprised you of the contents of this post but here goes anyway: Canon Australia are giving out double cashbacks now. Theres a few rules you follow but they are simple:

The cashbacks range from $ 50 to $ 200 on selected Canon Cameras. That's a given and worth while in itself. They go until the 24th of December, 2015.

IF you then buy $ 200 or more of Canon products in the same transaction ( and this does NOT work with buying the lens os a standard kit...) then you double that camera cashback.

Essentially, you want to look at getting another lens to complement the kit ones, or a flash, or batteries and a lenshood or a battery grip, etc. to activate the double cashback.

My choice would be a flash. The 430EXII is probably my favourite though I can see the advantages of the 600 EX RT for some users. All the Canon flashes work like steam trains anyway so you really can't go wrong there.

Or get one more lens - a portrait one or a close-up one. Whatever - you can't go wrong with a prime lens from Canon on any of the bodies, as long as you remember to get the right one for the sensor size.

Epsonnews - Money Is In The Pipeline

Two good bits of economic news from Epson - makers of fine inkjet printers, inks, and media.

1. The cash back offer to purchasers of Epson Stylus Pro SP-4900 printers has been extended. From the 15th of September to the 31st of October 2015 you can receive a $ 500 cash back from Epson on these fine devices. Of course you have to buy it from a dealer - like us - between these two dates, but all you have to do is contact them online after you have your printer and let them sight your serial number and invoice.

The 4900 is a very sophisticated A2 roll and sheet printer. It can produce all day, every day.

Prices For Fujifilm - Right Now

I have no head for figures, as the stock controller and accountant here well know...but I do try. Recently I noticed some confusing figures regarding Fujifilm cameras on offer so I thought I would set out the real deal right here.

Firstly - the Fujifilm company have a cashback offer going on right now for selected items. Bear in mind it'll cease on the 31st of this month - end of July 2015.

Currently they will pay you back $ 100 if you purchase a new Fujifilm X-100T. If you purchase an X-Pro1, a black X-T1, or a graphite X-T1 they will pay you back $ 200. Good deal.

Here's the current price you need to pay in the shop for each of these fine pieces of gear:

4. X-Pro1...................$ 888

The simple maths means that if you get the X-100T and apply to Fujifilm for your cashback you'll eventually have paid only $ 1388 for a superb camera.
