Photo Live Expo 2016 - Less Than A Month To Go

You will probably have seen one of the Photo Live 2016 Announcements on your Facebook feed - or perhaps you are one of the subscribers to In The Loupe or our shop emails. You may even be someone who reads this weblog column...

Well, you'll have noticed that there is slightly under a month to go until the Photo Live 2016 is staged - it'll be Sunday, the 24th of July at the Perth Novotel Langley form 10:00 to 5:00. The advertisements encourage you to wander down and wander in and wander around.

 The cost for wandering is very reasonable - a gold coin donation to Telethon - but you might want to consider a little more focused activity. There are to be a number of speakers on a wide variety of photographic subject and the cost for attending their talks is VERY reasonable. Like a pinta beer in a pub price reasonable...so you can get the latest ideas about specialised subjects from world-class speakers who are recognised experts in their field. Interested in....?

Well, never mind finding an App for that - we've got real live experts for that and for the price of a talk ticket, you get to hear what you really need to know. I'm not going to use the phrase "horse's mouth" here because some of these are attractive people, but if you want to find out what is right - RIGHT NOW - then go to their lectures.

If you're going to be in the workshop mood on the day, there are three longer session. They deal with

Now the catch to all these pleasures is that you'll need to book a place for them. And It would be a good idea to do so now, because last year saw some of the sessions booked out. Sure, you might be lucky and nip into a session if it is not packed, but you'll pay more on the day than with a pre-booking.

So go over to the Photo Live Expo website and start clicking. It'll be the most fun on a Sunday that you can have in town.

Yallingup Without The Surf

If you fancy a trip down south to talk photography with the AIPP people, it looks as though the 22nd and 23rd of February are the dates to aim for. They are calling it the South West Summer Sessions and organising it at Caves House, Yallingup.

Those of you who have been there know it for a rather magnificent resort of the 20's and 30's associated with the Yallingup caves and beaches and boasting a pretty magnificent period decor. They are turning on a number of high-poewered speakers for the two days as well as trade displays and professional workshops.

This is an eat, greet, listen, learn, schmooze, and develop Monday and Tuesday with David Dare Parker and Martine Perret. You'll be challenged by talks on photojournalism. business development, and creative thinking.

They'll feed you well - all day at various times - thought their flyer does note that the prices do not include accommodation - you book that separately with Caves House or other hostelries in the area. There is always sleeping on the beach but the bugs can get a bit much in summer.

They are running Earlybird prices for people booking between now and January 31st - don't neglect these as you can save yourself $ 100 by doing so. The price structure is:

A Tale Of Two Cities - And You're In One Of Them

This will be a far, far better thing than you have ever done before. And when you are done you can go to a far, far sweeter rest than you have ever known...

Actually, you are going to have a Dickens of a good time with one of the best Leica Photographers there is  - Thorsten Overgaard. Thorsten has selected Perth as one of only two Australian cities* for his next tour and seminar involving Leica photography.

Thorsten does this a lot and does it very well - he will be taking this tour of instruction to many countries in the world and to many large cities. Perth - and Camera Electronic - is darned lucky to have him here.

The day to set in your mind for Perth is Thursday the 10th of December 2015... but bear in mind this is not just a few hours - this is a four-day event. It'll be involving you totally until Sunday the 13th of December. And the involvement will make you a better and more visually aware photographer.

The first evening concentrates on Leica gear - and you'll be asked to bring your own cameras and lenses so that you and Thorsten can figure out which combination of equipment will give you the best chance of success.

 The second day is action - a photo walkabout with interactive help and advice about the coverage you are getting. We note that Thorsten's webpage with the details advises a good pair of comfortable shoes, so the walking may indeed be about...

Day three brings the images shot into the computer and details workflow and editing. You'll need to make sure your computer will work with Aperture or Lightroom to get full benefit.

And day four fills in the holes - gaps in your knowledge and vision that have become evident - and chance to know better and to make it better - and then have a final analysis of your results.

This level of commitment to you and dedication to your learning - remember the seminar is limited to 8-10 people so you very definitely are getting personal instruction - doesn't come cheap. No true learning does. The whole affair costs $ 2500 but if you go to Thorsten's website and make an Earlybird booking it comes down to $ 2000. In Leica terms that is not a surprise...

Stan Davies Is All Wet

Let me rephrase that.

Stan Davies frequently takes photographs whilst waterborne - he uses one of the most intriguing of the Nikon cameras to do this. During the course of these adventures he may become immersed. When he visits the shop he is dry - and dressed. All is well.

Now, Mr. Davies will be visiting the shop to tell people about the Nikon 1 AW-1 camera system and the explain about his upcoming workshop.

He'll be conducting the event over two days in the Margaret River region near the start of December. As it is to be on a weekend there will be an opportunity for a lot of people to travel to it. And it is to be somewhat unusual:

Attendees will be supplied a Nikon 1 AW-1 waterpoof camera for their use during the event.

It will be in and around water so attendees will need to bring their bathers - and i would suggest thongs as well.

Attendees will need to bring their own SD card and a small tripod  - and to arrange their own overnight accommodation in the area.

They'll meet at Russell Ord's studio on Saturday the 5th of December at 2:00 ( plenty of time to drive down from Perth on Saturday morning ) for a presentation by Stan on the Nikon1 AW-1 system. Then of for a sunset shoot with the information fresh in mind.

Next morning there's to be a practical class to put more of the watery knowledge to use and a hot wash-up conference after that - and still plenty of time to motor back to perth before he end of the day.

For $ 199 it's going to be a good photographic experience.

Aw, SHOOT! Guess I Better Get Along To Learn How To Do It.

Well...yes... SHOOT Photography Workshops is a very good idea if you want to learn how to do it. And here are a few new dates to put in your calendar for just that purpose:

August 8th is this saturday morning. If you'd like to go to the beginner's workshop entitled Digital Stills with  Anthony Wilson - and it is only $ 99 for a full four hours between 12:00 and 4:00PM - email to   shannon@shootworkshops.com.au.

On August 15 Nick Melidonis will help new learners to begin to cope with the Adobe Photoshop editing program. It is knowledge that we ALL need to make out photographs sing, and Nick is a good teacher - or should that be choirmaster? Okay - now the next one was a mystery to me until I phoned Shannon myself.

On Saturday the 22nd of August Dale Neill will be speaking about " Broken Images ". Dale has seen a lot of photo competitions and noted the entries that are submitted - but that will never be considered for recognition and prizes. He's inviting people to bring a few of their own shots for consideration but the most important message will be how to avoid the " broken " images that rule you out of contention.

Last cab off the rank for the more advanced photographer is a chance to tune your food photography skills with Stefan Gosatti on Wednesday, August the 26th. Running between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, this will be $ 199 worth of very up-to-the-minute instruction from someone who knows food and photography on a pro level. I don't think he swears like Gordon Ramsay, so that is a good thing.

Well I'll Be Damned - Probably Next Month

My surprise is occasioned by discovering that I am to be a judge for a photo contest. I have just read the Google+ posting for Rob Masters' Photowalk through Cottesloe later in the month and find I am to be the one to assess the images afterwards. Photowalkers would be well advised to consider that I am a strict judge but I bribe easily. Hint: baked goods...

Okay, apart from that, here is the spiel for the Photowalk:

Place: Grant Marine Park - corner of Marine Terrace and Grant Street, Cottesloe.

Event: Social photowalk with Rob Masters to explore some of the architecture and the depiction of the water scene of Cottesloe.

Rob will be taking people of all skill levels with him as he discusses the features of the area and helps them to capture great images. Dan from our shop will be with him and have some interesting equipment for people to try. There are several hostelries to which the walkers may repair after sunset for discussions.

The two photo contests will involve capture of the best images of the local architecture and the water scene. Apparently I am to judge the entries and winners will have them printed in good size by Dots To Spots printing.

The Google+ posting seems to have muddled the dates for the judging and the announcement of he winners...I suspect it will be early July rather than early June as early June has already gone...Never mind - it will be fun anyway.

The Drones Club - Not Just For The Egg And Bean

If you are a reader of P.G. Wodehouse you'll recognise the reference. If it is all a mystery but you would like to know more about the art and business of using the UAV for photography - and the results that one expert has achieved - then we have a night for you.

A free night, as it happens. At Shoot Photography Workshops premises  - 232 Stirling Street, Perth. It will be held between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM on June 16th. Thats a week from today - next Tuesday.

You'll be seeing the photographer - Christopher Fulham and his talk will be entitled " The Edge Of Photography. It deals with the real frontiers of digital photo practice.

Cinema drones - the UAV - and iPhones - the HHN - will be topics of discussion. But more than that - Christopher will be speaking on a broad range of subjects all concerned with working and surviving in harsh natural and business climates. Art from the air with the video drone and how to put money in your pocket from any number of related sources.

The Video At The Cinema - Abraham Joffe And Canon

Look out your diary, Canon shooters. Turn forward to the 17th of this month - it is a Wednesday.

Abraham Joffe, Canon Australia, and Camera Electroinic are cooperating to present a day-long workshop dedicated to the Canon DSLR as a video making system. It will be held at the Cinema Paradiso on James Street in Northbridge. Starting time is 10:00 AM and it will finish at 4:30 PM.

What's going to happen? Mr Joffe will be showing his work, Canon will be showing their equipment, There will be a group project of interviews and footage around the local area, and a review and analysis at the end of the day. And lunch in the middle of the day. Yay!

Mr. Joffe knows his business - he has filmed all over Australia, in East Timor, Antarctica, and Africa. He is a brave man - he does videography for weddings and is highly sought-after for his skill - so much so that Canon have recently honoured him with a title of Canon Master.

The History Of the World, My Sweet...

Is who gets eaten, and who gets to eat.

Or, as it happens, who gets to take pictures of food before they get to eat it. In the case of the Olympus event organised with Camera Electronic on Tuesday last, apparently they ate well.

The occasion was not all just gnashing molars - there was a presentation by travelling team of travelling experts from Olympus and by our local representative of the new Olympus OM-D E-M5 mkII camera and a number of the lenses that service it. The venue was the Brika cafe just up the street from Camera Electronic - and they got well over thirty paying customers.

The restaurant was not lit like a studio - it was a restaurant, after all, But that means that it also looked like a restaurant, and as they wished to capture food looking good in harmonious surroundings this was the way to do it. The Olympus E-M5 mkII has a secret weapon in this sort of shooting - exceptional 5-way camera stabilisation. Tripods are fine, but you can't always have one. Flash is fine but it doesn't always light the subject quite the way you would like. Arms and hands, as it turns out are fine - if the camera can remain steady - the Olympus can.

As you'll see from the attached images, there was some technical lecturing from Quett and Burke, and then presentation of the subject matter. It must have been an exercise in restraint  - to be taking the pictures before tasting the subject. Bless them for their dedication.

I wonder if there are any plans to hold a similar scientific seminar in a cocktail bar? Or should it be art? It worked for Henri Toulouse-Lautrec after all - And he didn't have the benefit of the latest Olympus cameras and lenses!

Shooting For Dollars - With Shoot

I type this column for money.

If there are new products, no telephone interruptions, and coffee, the daily piece costs the company about $ 11. Hopefully it inspires readers to come in and purchase items and services that yield a profit of more than $ 11 - thus continuing business.

It is not as profitable to me as washing the dishes - that yields me $ 15 per day before taxes - but at least I do not have to scrape dried spaghetti off the laptop.

The point of all this is to remind the newer readers who are just contemplating turning their interest in photography into a business venture that time is indeed money and they need to persuade the world to press pennies into their hands each conscious hour of their day.

Time spent surfing the net might be fun, as might be time spent networking in coffee shops or looking into the shops, or catching up on the latest episode of whatever...but it does not satisfy Synergy, the council, Water Corporation, Telstra, Alinta, HBF, or the check-out girl at Coles in any meaningful way. And for those who are addicted to zombie and vampire literature but have run out of something to read we can recommend the ATO bulletins...but don't read 'em in a deserted house late at night.

Time spent gathering real saleable knowledge, on the other hand, is a good investment. It can be turned to account. It can EARN money rather than waste it. That s why we run Shoot Photography Workshops next door. So people can learn - and some can go on to earn from that.

Here's One You Can Shift Into Gear For

Hooray! We're going to have a Thorsten Overgaard workshop that features Leicas, cars, and girls! This should be enough to satisfy anyone in search of pleasure...unless you want to add pints of English ale and a muzzle-loading rifle shooting contest as well, in which case it goes from earthly delight to heavenly...I may be biased, there.

Never mind. On the 17th of November Thorsten Overgaard will be conducting a workshop detailing the best way to tackle these subjects, and then leading the photo shooters to Cottesloe Civic Center for the Celebration of the Classic Motor Car. There will be plenty of time to capture the cars and from the looks of the promotional lineup, there should be some remarkable vehicles. Anyone using a Leica has a great chance of coming back with classic images too.

March To The Sound Of The Canon

You might wonder how much noise a Canon can make - in the world of motor sport, a very big noise indeed. We found out yesterday when we attended the Camera Electronic Canon workshop at Barbagallo raceway in Wanneroo.

The track is well-provided for the actual racers - we were there on a Motorcycle Club practice and tuning day. There is a function room at the start of the main straight with trackside seating - McCracken House - and we use it for a lecture theater and lunch venue.

Mark Horsburgh lectured us last year on basic race car photography but this year he added new discoveries in lighting with the Canon 600 speedlights. His work has a really new and sparkling look with these portable lights and it takes on very much of the studio illustration aspect even when taken out in the field. The ability to control three groups of flashes with radio transmissions rather than infrared is the thing...you can send the signal even in bright sunlight or around corners. My camera system uses the IR system and I am so jealous of Canon users...

Of course each year from Canon brings new lenses and bodies. The Canon reps bring some along and the troops get to fire them off out on the track. Mark mentioned trying something new each year himself - even to using tilt/shift and fisheye lenses in his work. Most of the motorcycle shots were taken using different types of telephotos but I did get some good views using a wide angle.

On the subject of the business of motorsport photography, Mark was quite candid about the time pressures and stress that are put on the shooters by the event organisers and the editors of various publications. It would appear to be a fertile field for experimentation but don't expect to eat regular...

Anyway, I took some views of the activities, including a very lovely model and an almost equally lovely set of photographers wearing fluoro vests. It was a great day and the results that the photographers got from the Canon lenses means that a number of them will be coming to talk to us over the shop counter.

Trackside With Canon

Last year's Canon workshop day seems to have been a success. We all trooped out to Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo and Mark Horsburgh gave a show and lecture on the art and business of motor sport photography. The Canon company reps brought a metric tonne of fancy lenses and the latest Canon bodies for the participants to try and Saul organised a couple of fancy motorcycles and a very attractive model to provide a studio experience as well.

Of course it was all about the course - it was a motorcycle practise event and there were subjects circling the track all day at high speed. There were cautious riders and show-offs. Fortunateley no-one came sideways through the spectators, but had they done so the photographers would have known what to do* - thanks to Mark's talk.

In any event, the participants took as many lenses as they could carry off the glass buffet and stationed themselves around the track and got deafened and covered in rubber dust and had a glorious time of it.
They took home great images as well as a great deal of knowledge.

Same again this year - the 8th of September. Cost you $ 199, we feed you lunch in between the lecture and the races. Remember to bring a coupla memory cards - I'd guess an SDHC and a CF - and test out EVERY BLESSED THING.

Speaking Whereof We Know

I note that we will have a Nikon event next week - the 9th of July - and the staff have been permitted, enjoined, and ordered to go to it. I, for one, am delighted, as the man giving forth is an expert in his field. Kristian Dowling  knows how to take pictures of celebrities so that they continue to be celebrated - and he will likely be showing some of us the secrets that ensure his success. I'll benefit - a little later in the month someone wants me to shoot a party as if it were a Hollywood event, and I reckon Kristian's advice will be worth gold.

Still have some places for interested punters so ring Shoot Workshops and make a booking for it. As long as there is one spot left for me, mind.

All of which is an introduction to my plan of action for shop-related talks this year. I will be seeing several clubs for their evening activities this year and in some they want a little talk. It would be the height of folly to ask me to speak on the subject of fashion photography - one look in my wardrobe at home would tell you all I know about fashion. Likewise getting me to hold forth on street photography, sports, or architecture. Have a look at the dismal results on this page and you'll see what I mean. If the clubs want to know about these things, they will have to snare Gosatti or Phillips or Romano for that. These guys DO know whereof they speak because they do it well.

I shall speak on the little wedding and how to photograph it simply. I shall speak about the Small World and how to photograph it in the studio. About the photography of costumed societies. About the hot rod and how to capture it. These may not be what the clubs want to hear...but it is what they are going to get. It actually will have some value of expertise, albeit small.

Learn Time

Good morning, and welcome to a new week. The sun is up, you are alive, and your computer has enough electricity to operate - life is good.

Time to consider something new - something to fire your enthusiasm and add to your skills - something to help you see more clearly. Time to learn. And here are two very good teachers.

1. The first is a man who Canon users will recognize immediately. Darren Jew visited us last year to show us his skill at underwater photography and to help Perth photographers have a wonderful open day at the Perth Zoo.

Darren will be visiting again and will conduct two unique events. He will be teaching a 1:1 Masterclass for underwater photography and in this case it will be in a very appropriate classroom - under water. You get to dive with Darren, shoot with Darren - including using some of his equipment - and come back to the surface. This may seem an odd thing to say, but go and look at some of the places underwater that Mr. Darren goes to and some of the creatures that he swims with, and you will appreciate the thought of getting home and drying out and looking at your pictures on the computer.

One to one courses with master photographers are rare enough - what about one to one at ten metres down? Wow. You'll be best contacting Darren on his website to get details but be aware that it will be a Saturday course and you will get wet.

Now Darren will also be conducting a dry-land class after this detailing his work with the Adobe Lightroom program. Even if your photographs are not full of sharks, rays, and whales, Darren can show you some of the most efficient and creative ways to use this program. Remember that Lightroom and its companion Photoshop are the two of the most compatible and slick photo-editing tools available for computer users on any platform.

2. Our second man is someone who may be new to you. Thorsten Overgaard is from Denmark - he conducts classes, tours and workshops all over the world and has launched out this year on a complete circuit of the globe. Saul learned about this and called him. They had a good long chat and as a result Saul convinced him to add Perth to the Australian part of the tour - this will be of great interest to our readers who live in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia - you see some of these places will also have seminars with Thorsten but they have SOLD OUT. Maybe it would be a good idea to grab a plane ticket and pop down to Perth for a bit of a holiday and bit of photo learning...

Thorsten works with Leica equipment - he is an expert with this gear and he likes to make sure that all his students get a chance to try it out and to really learn what their cameras can do. His website mentions that he tries to instill enthusiasm as well as raise the skill level,self confidence, and productivity of his students. That's no mean ambition in anyone - and when it is combined with the best of the German camera systems you can expect real improvements

He'll be doing two things - a one-day workshop on November 19th that runs from 9:00AM to 6:00PM for about $ 300 - and a more extensive photo seminar that runs over several days for $ 1500. This will be a busy time, with lectures, field assignment, guided workshop, and final computer work and presentation. But you will learn all about Leica work with people from a man who really knows how to make it happen.

Best thing to do is to pop over to Thorsten Overgaard on the computer and book directly with him. November is not that far away and this will be an ideal opportunity to develop real skill before the summer starts. Note: for North American and European readers, we have summer in December, January, and February - you may have been wondering were all the heat went during those months while you are shivering in front of the radiator. We have it, and we use it to go to the beach and sit out watching cricket. You can't have it back until we are done with it...

Full Hand - Five Of A Kind

Here's a safe bet for aspiring photographers who will be in Perth between Thursday August the 30th and Sunday September the 2nd. You can put some money on and win big.

The game is photography and the player is Peter Coulsen. You'll remember his presentations and lectures when he wowed the town with his approach to fashion advertising. Remember the donnybrook over the red shoes picture? Same Peter.

He'll be in town for the Father's Day weekend and has scheduled five classes and workshops with great new material for Perth shooters.

1. Thursday 30th August from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM - Perth CBD - venue to be announced

       This master class is 4 hours of intensive hands - on location shooting in natural light. And Peter really means it - no flashes and no reflectors  - all the elements of great photographic illustration drawn from the shooting environment itself. This will be an eye-opener for any photographer as it will engage the services of three professional models.

        Cost is $230 and the course is limited to 15 people.

2. Thursday 30th August from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM - Perth CBD - venue to be announced
 
     This one is a Photoshop workshop to show his workflow and teach how to blend models flawlessly into backdrops without difficult masking. There'll be tips and hints for layers, colour management, blending and the entire method of exporting and printing. This means personal secrets for increased success with editing. Plus there will be pizza.

      Cost is $160 and the course is limited to 10 people.

3. Friday 31st August from 10:00AM to 2:00 PM - Perth CBD - venue to be announced

      This master class focusses on using the hotel room as studio - assessing the light available - metering - managing the colours and exposures - working with professional models in location situations. Two professional models will be assisting.

     Cost is $220 and the course is limited to 12 people

4. Saturday September 1st from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Perth CBD - venue to be announced

     This workshop will deal with studio techniques in a studio...with full equipment. Learn lighting from one light onwards and find out how to tame the colour that you'll see. You'll have two professional models to work with and find out how to communicate and pose them. There is lunch provided.

     Cost is $400 and this workshop is limited to 10 people

5. Sunday 2nd of September from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM - Perth CBD - venue to be announced

     Wanna do beauty and fashion? This is the one-day intensive that will show how to plan the shoot, get the hair done and the coat of paint on, how to dress 'em, how to communicate with the models, how to do high and low key lighting, how to do specific types of lighting for specific fashion and glamour tasks. Two professional models to work with and lunch provided. hard work but fun.

Workshop Diary

Did goe to Wanneroo and whiled away day at the Barbagallo Raceway. Was vastly entertained.

 It was a motorcycle practise day and a perfect opportunity for Mark Horsbrugh to lecture the enthusiasts on the fine art of motor sports photography. Mark attends many motor sports meetings of all ilk - and in the case of the major events takes many, many exoposures. The system that he follows to review and classify these images before they go to publishers finally explained for me the extensive sorting systems that software manufacturers build into their systems. Without these, I suspect one would be lost in a welter of images.

But Mark was not lost, nor was he unfamiliar with his subject. He broke the news gently about the business of getting into motor sport photography - the difficulties associated with getting to shoot major races and the long hours required to provide the images. But he was also encouraging to the starters - he had a number of good suggestions as to how to approach local racing organizations and publishers. Who knows - someone there in the 60+ audience may well pursue the sporting image in the future.

They would do well to remember Mark's photo of the racing car heading toward him out of control, and to look a the sequence of images that led up to the winning shot. As he mentioned, the thing stopped a metre away from him...that's a metre in front...

The studio setup was fun - thanks to two lovely motorcycles loaned by friends and Megan the professional model. Please see Ernest Cesar's album that he has put up on our Facebook page and see what could be done with Elinchrom Quadra Ranger sets and with Canon speedlites. Note that the new control system for Canon that utilizes the 600 flash is elegance itself.

We shall also be interested to see some of the racing photographs taken by the attendees - they got a chance to go track-side at one of the good bends to practise what Mark had taught. The light stayed good for most of the day - and no rain - so the bikes could wind out pretty well. Note to self: If I ever deliver a lecture it will probably not a good idea to do it next door to racetrack full of motor cycles going at full tilt. Or do it over a Tannoy.

Holy Utility Belt, Batman!

 

I've just been watching a colleague pack up the showbags for the Canon 2012 Workshop that is coming. We'll be going to Barbagallo Raceway on the 21st of this month  - it's a Saturday - for about the most exciting camera day yet. Mark Horsburgh is going to show us his motorsport work and then show us how he does it - with professional bodies, lenses, and lighting. It will be motorcycles so there is bound to be a lot of fast and terrifying action during the track sequences and a great deal of saturated colour in the pits.

Pretty good show bag - I can see water bottles, lanyards, pens, rain protectors, Hoodman Lens Cleanse sachets, and the packing is still going on. Over in another part of the room is a big pile of Army .44 pistols and ammunition but I'm not sure if they are for the workshop - they might just be for the school holidays. In any event there is going to something to take home besides great images and a slight case of deafness. Note: these are racing motorcycles and they have big exhaust pipes.

Canon Workshop Coming Round The Bend

There is a Canon Day coming round the bend and Canon shooters who have been hankering for a bit of action in their shooting will be stoked on this one. I will blog it later in the week when I get more details, but rest assured that this will not be one for the faint of heart. You may want to look out a cap, pair of sunnies, and efficient earplugs.
