Getting Smarter With Camera Electronic

That's Evelyn in our Rental Department. We're not selling her:

a. She's far too valuable.

b. She's too difficult to wrap.

The interesting thing for you customers out there is that in many cases she is the person you want to talk to if you are unsure about something - particularly if you are unsure what you want to buy.

Oh, sure, all the other staff can answer your questions about new and used equipment, and they can point out the features and controls on the examples that are in the shop. And you can heft them and look through the viewfinders and snap off the shutters...but if the photography you really want to do is outside of a small shop with fluorescent lighting, you really need to go somewhere else with the gear...

Now let's face it - we all haunt the internet - you're reading this right now on some sort of screen - and we all speculate about what sort of equipment would really suit us. We read the reviews and forums and on-line arguments. We listen to our friends tell us what we need. We even read magazines that are dedicated to telling us what we want, and can do so for cars, washing machines, and cameras all in one issue...But when it comes to actually knowing if something is what we want and need, we are still in the dark. We need help. Enter Evelyn with help.

She is in charge of an extensive range of top-quality camera gear - also lenses and lighting goods - that is hired out to Perth's professional photographers. All maintained perfectly and charged up and ready to go. The pros know what they want - but if an amateur doesn't know what they want, they can also benefit from the service. Here's and example of how to do it:

Say you are unsure whether you should get a full-frame or small-frame camera. You are unsure of which brand to go for. You want to do several things - landscape shots, school sports shots, and flower shots.

Weekend one - you hire a small-frame DSLR with a macro lens and a telephoto. You try it out all weekend on the three types of shooting you intend to do. Take all the pictures in RAW and JPEG and see if your image-editing program on your computer will decode the RAW. You can spend the weekdays processing your results.

Weekend two - You hire a full-frame camera from the opposing maker - just to experience the ergonomics of it. Get a zoom and a wide angle and go out and take two days worth of pictures. Then process them in the week.

Weekend three - hire a mirror-less system camera body and one average zoom lens. Use it like you did the others and note the different weight that you are carrying. Also try it on the sports and see if it reacts as fast as you will need. Process the pictures and then compare all the results on your screen. Many image-editing programs will allow you to stack three images side-by-side on the same screen.

You have now got the information you need - gathered in the most appropriate fashion - about your own photography. You have paid out three hire fees and have gotten...a gret deal smarter. If you purchase something within two weeks that is the exact same as the gear that you hired out, you may even be able to get a portion of the rental fee credited toward the purchase.

In any case, you are far better off - you will not be kicking yourself for committing all your photo money to a system that is neither effective nor comfortable for you. You will save the grief of changing a system. Your pictures will be better for it.

Mousetrap

I called into the shop yesterday to place mousetraps on the toilet seats and as I was waiting for the ladies loo to be vacated, I got to chatting with one of the professional photographers who was standing at the rental counter. I noticed he was taking out a set of studio mono lights - a very good quality item.

The odd thing for me was I remember him taking out these same mono lights with various light modifiers all last year, and, I think, the year before. Weekday rentals mostly and some weekend rentals. Lotsa rentals...

At this stage of the game I am not at all certain whether or not his rental charges have equalled or surpassed the price of the lights when new. If so, I think he has sort of shot himself in the foot.

Rental of professional equipment is a wise move for many reasons - not all of them financial.

a. If you cannot afford the gear to do the job, but have enough money to rent it for a day or so, do so.

b. If someone else is paying the tab...ie. an actual client...go for it. The cost of doing it is buried in the fee you charge.

c. The gear is sound, and working, and you have the guarantee of the shop on this.

d. The gear is up to date - clients who base their buying decisions on your gear will look more favourably on you.

e. If the gear breaks down and it is not your fault, you are free of the worry of repair costs.

f. You can rent exotic stuff that you'll never need more than once in your career. No storing junk in the studio shelves.

But the whole system breaks down if you have spent more on getting it out than you get back for the job or if you find that at the end of the day you have spent far more renting than buying. Plus each rental and return is two trips into the shop from your working location - time is money. Rental is also  bond and insurance money paid out. You have to have that money tied up at each rental. And you can't take the rental stuff out of the state, either.

Now I've rented a lens or two in my time, for specific jobs. It was good, but I must say I was glad to give it back. It showed me that I did not want to buy it...and that negative was a good positive from a business angle.

So where this post is going... is to drive you to the rental counter for certain, but to get you to do some figuring...if you really like the stuff you rent, consider buying it. In some cases you might get some of the rent back in the purchase price.

The Best Thing About Rental Is When You Take The Stuff Back

What?

What kind of a statement is that for an shop blog? What sort of advertisement does that make? Are you insane?

Nope. Sane and sober and closely shaved. Even smell good. And the thought is also a good one. Follow me along....

I used to take pictures of glamour girls and dancers. A lot of the pictures were taken on the Flapoflex camera with the deadly sharp Flaponar lenses. They showed all the wrinkles on the girls and they complained. I was losing business - so I bought a Mugugaipan Portrait lens with the variable fluffy aperture and the autojiggler circuit - and used it for about a year while the fashion for soft dancer photos was current. It was eye-wateringly expensive at the time but I figured I would eventually make the money back.

Then the fashion changed. An international superstar iconic legend photographer got a big feature in Australian Photo Wannabee magazine and everything had to be razor sharp, high-def, and with the contrast turned up to 87. My Mugugaipan lens was worthless as a money-maker. I tried to sell it at the shop, on eBay, and on Gumtree and the best offer I got was to go and do something rude with it.

I reflected that I had made a business error - putting my real money into something that was unreal - the fashionable image. What I really should have done was to be realistic - I could have come into Camera Electronic on the occasions when I had booked a wrinkled dancer and rented their Mugugaipan for the weekend.

I would have gotten all the pictures I needed in about four rentals in that year, and had none of the capital investment vanish. Each time I could have taken the Mugugaipan back with a clear conscience and the chance that it would be the last time it was needed. I did not need to own the Mugu - just use it four times.

The change in fashion is a factor that we cannot control - neither can we sometimes control our own tastes or the way in which our vision develops. It is no good having a closet full of gear that we have outgrown, or never grew into. Will ye or nil ye with the new lens or camera - curb your desires sensibly - rent it for enough times to find out if it is useful to you, and try not to hold onto it one minute longer than it pays you to.

New Camera In Rental Department - Sony

That's a coincidence! We just had a training talk by the Sony representative yesterday on the new Sony A7R Mk II camera - the full-frame mirror-less system camera - and today Thomas informs me that the camera is now available for hire from our Rental Department.

The extra new features of the camera that revolve around the 5-axis stabilization and the very high spec auto-focus system will be two of the factors that excite new camera users - particularly if they are also contemplating using it for video work.

I am never a full bottle on these but my chance to handle it yesterday assured me that the AF system is quite amazing - particularly the facility it has to track a subject back and forth across the frame and keep it in focus. That, and the brightness of the viewfinder  - and the overall open-ness of the view - struck me immediately. I wear spectacles and the business of peering into some viewfinders can be a time consuming process. The Sony lets it all be seen at one glance.

And again - the ergonomics of the body suggest that for a medium-sized hand there should be no trouble curving the fingers around to operate the controls - those who laugh at this line are invited to come try a few other cameras where this is not necessarily the case. Awkward once is awkward once but multiply it by 5000 shots and see what your fingers look like...

Note: This camera has the new Sony back-lit sensor. It is no secret that Sony also make sensors for other high-end camera manufacturers but their newest and best is here now on their own body. Why wait?

Camera Electronic Rental Department Says Go Away...With A New Lens

Specifically, go away* with a new lightweight Nikon 500mm or 600mm telephoto lens. They have just come on to the Rental Department roster and are available for hire.

These are not lenses that will get much use in the studio...or at the wedding - unless you really don't want to get close to the bridal party. They are animal lenses - bird lenses - surfing and sport lenses. They are air show lenses.

Rental Department Gets Big Pentax

If you were inspired by James Simmons' lecture last Wednesday night - the one with the beer and the sausage rolls and the prawn on a stick - this is your chance to see if the new Pentax 645Z camera and lenses are the next big thing for you.

The camera pumps out images in a native Pentax form but also puts out the DNG - the  standard that the manufacturers hope will become universal and last long enough to bypass computer changes. It means that if you have the standard computer programs you should be able to open the files and see how good it does.

Renting Your Way To Success - Studio 19

I don't know if Studio 19 has a studio - but I do know that they have a series of good ideas for your studio.

They are a firm that rents photographic equipment to the public in a three-way deal with our shop. It has advantages for all parties concerned.

You select the new gear you want - we send off an application to the rental firm...and I am happy to say that it is a reasonably easy thing to do on the computer...and they give a quick decision on the contract. You take the goods away with you, we bill Studio 19, and they take their monthly fee out of your credit card or direct payment.

The minimum contract time is 6 months. You can turn the equipment back into them at the end of that time and no more to pay - indeed no funny exit fees or that sort of nonsense. They'll send a courier to pick it up or you can drop it off back at our store and they'll get it from us. So that bit is smart.

If you continue with the gear, you can elect to purchase it at any time - they'll keep knocking down the price as the months roll on until it becomes a very low fee indeed at the end of two years. All the figures are laid out on the on-line contract so you can see exactly what they whole thing will cost at any point of time. So that is smart.

If you wish you can take out cheap repair or replacement insurance per month in case you are going to skydive into volcanoes with the 600mm Flapoflex lens strapped to your neck. The insurance is on the lens - not your neck...

Here's the kicker - this is the way to get exotic equipment to take away with you at a reasonable price - if you are going out of the country, Camera Electronic Rental Department are not going to clock out that 600mm Flapoflex from our rental stock - in case the volcano wins. Studio 19 will take the risk - because the price of the thing is covered in insurances and in the contract period. If you succeed in taking your aerial macro tele volcano shots in Kakastan and do not need the expense of the thing after 6 months - turn it in and go on to your next adventure - as soon as the burns heal.

The factor of change in digital photography and the opportunity to trial gear at your own pace  - and to see if your business predictions will come true - is the thing that makes this form of Studio 19 rental a really good idea. You can take a punt with the gear and if it all works wonderfully, you can purchase the thing outright at an advantageous price - if it all goes pear-shaped you are not locked in past 6 months.

Note: As with all financial contracts, this one also means that someone will be viewing your financial situation - now and in the past. Unless you have been in the habit of taking 6 month vacations in Pentridge without the option, you should be fine.

Final Note: This is not just for professional photographers nor is it just for expensive items. They'll consider most people and most gear. So that is smart.

New Items Available For Rental

No. Not the Cobra car. That is just to attract your wandering attention, as it did mine.

Thomas from the Rental Department says there are three new Nikon lenses added to their list for hiring out:

1. Nikon AF-D 105mm f:2 DC-Nikkor lens

2. Nikon AF-D 135mm f:2 DC-Nikkor lens

These two optics are fitted with decoupling mechanisms - the DC of the title. They are AF-D lenses so you need to have a a Nikon camera with the internal focussing motor if they are going to do AF for you - but they have such a specialised effect on the background when you operate the DC ring that you may find yourself always doing manual focussing anyway. The effect of the DC ring is to give a variable softness to the background of a portrait shot - though perversely t could also be set to do that to the foreground.

Like the Imagon lenses for large format, these DC lenses require a good deal of experimentation. Note that they are FX lenses for all the DC designation.

3. Nikon AF-S 300mm f:4E ED VR lens

Long, fast enough, and steady. Good sports and large animal lens.

Rental Retro Revival - Two Nikon Gems In The Cabinet

I normally do not feature secondhand or ex-demo gear here on the blog....but this is different.

As you know, we cycle through rental equipment periodically at good prices, and with the full and correct warranties. Thus you can see some pretty good-looking Nikon and Canon gear at the front of the shop every so often. Now is one of the times.

The items that particularly caught my eye were the two Nikon Df camera bodies that have just been set out. The Df is the retro-styled full-frame body with the comfortable hand grip and full manual controls out in the places where they were during the film era. But the innards are pure Nikon digital, and cutting-edge too. You can customise the controls to operate  the way you want to and be sure of absolute resolution and noise handling. It's that good.

Tamron Try-On Trial Tips Trade Trip

And who said you can't write a snappy header early in the morning?

Then the idea is you-buy-after-trying...makes sense.

Half A Month To Save On Commercial Rental

Today is Friday the 13th and those of you not cowering under the covers in a 5º morning or hiding in the broom closet for fear of bad luck may wish to ring the Flexi Commercial people on 1300 340 447 and discuss money.

Specifically, discuss how you can get two months free lease on photographic equipment with them by jumping on a deal between now and the end of the month. We are approaching the end of the Australian financial year and Flexi Commercial are offering a deal  for working photographers that will allow extra value on their financial leases.

If you are going to spend between $2499 and $4999 and are prepared to run a lease for 36 months minimum - or indeed if you want to spend more money than that....they have a good extension of the lease to talk to you about.

Remember that the Flexirent idea allows you a great deal of leeway to use the latest equipment to make money with - while it is still hot on the market. Of course they want you to pay money to them, but then that is the nature of business - the transfer of goods, services, and money.

But you need to get up and get moving before the end of the month. Preferably before the end of the morning...

No Need To Rend Your Garments Over Rental

I was delighted this morning to be introduced to Thomas - our new staff member who will be working in the rental and repair department. He has been seeing what we do and has been in conference with out IT man. I think Jason will also be delighted as the pressure of the rental department has been intense these last few weeks.

Rental is a good idea for a number of reasons for a number of people. Photographers who don't have enough money to afford to buy decent equipment can stump up enough for a rental...and if they get paid for their work they might be able to become buyers rather than renters.

Other people are flush enough for normal gear but have no reasonable excuse that they can make to their bank or their spouse for a lens that costs $ 7000. They can justify a weekend with the rental.

Yet others really do contemplate one of those once-in-a-lifetime take your breath away and leave you eating cabbage for a year purchases but do not want to leap into the volcano without being absolutely certain - so they rent their heart's desire several times before buying it. I have a feeling that there are a number of marriages that have been contracted on the same basis...

Finally, there are the photographers who are travelling on someone else's dollar. Pro's. They don't want to schlepp a giant lens through the airports of Australia so they rent one when they get here and save the backache. They bill the client.

Doing a rental is pretty straight forward, though your wouldn't believe the computer flow that we need to do before it spits out a receipt. You'll need ID, and a deposit and, of course, a booking for the gear. Phone Jason or Thomas on 08 9328 4405.

New Glass To Rent

Looks like the Rental department is going to spread its wings with some new lenses for you - the users of the Hasselblad H system will be able to access the new 100mm 2.2 lens - that is the fastest that they make for their system right now - it is a very smooth piece of silica.

If you are a Canon or Nikon shooter who wants to try the best of the German optics, we will be sending out Zeiss lenses  for these systems - it looks like there will be the following:

1. 15mm f:2.8 for N and C
2. 18mm f:3.5 for N and C
3. 28mm f:2 for N
4. 35mm f:1.4 for N and C
5. 50mm f:1.4 for N and C
6. 85mm f:1.4 for N and C
7. 100mm f:2 Makro for N and C

Zeiss lenses were chosen by Nasselblad in their V series as the best glass in the world - or out of it. See the NASA pictures of all their space flights in the 70's and see if you agree. We are not proposing that you rent our lenses and blast off, but here in Perth you will find that they are a real revelation as far as clarity and resolution go.

Please note these Zeiss lenses are only auto focus if your name is Otto and you are prepared to focus them by turning the front ring yourself. If your name is Manuel you should be right at home.

New Canon Fisheye Lens now available for Hire!

Only a couple of weeks ago Canon announced the EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM, the world's first fisheye zoom lens to offer both 'circular' and 'full frame' images. And now you can use it any time too!


 This replacement for the EF 15mm F2.8 fisheye will produce circular images with a 180 degree angle of view when used at its widest setting on 35mm-format cameras such as the
EOS 5D Mark II, and images which cover the full sensor area at 15mm. It also incorporates marks at intermediate zoom positions denoting the widest settings which can be used on APS-C and APS-H format cameras to give full frame images without vignetting. Need to see iso 12800 to beleive it? Well I found some great sample shots here and here also. The quality is certainly impressive. It's not often you might need such a high iso, but having it there means if your light dissapears, you can still get the shot. Or you could need to freeze action in dim light, a nice clean high iso will save the day there too.
